Harvest is one of the most exciting times to visit Niagara wine country, with vineyards and wineries entering one of the busiest periods of the winemaking year.

Here’s a quick overview of when harvest happens, what you can expect to see, and how to make the most of your visit.

There’s something different about Niagara wine country during harvest. Vineyards that have been quietly growing all summer suddenly become working landscapes, grapes begin arriving at wineries by the load, and the region settles into one of its busiest and most exciting times of year.

For visitors, the Niagara wine harvest offers a chance to see another side of wine country. You can still spend the day tasting great local wines, but visiting at this time also allows you to catch glimpses of the work happening behind the bottles you’re enjoying.

When Does the Niagara Wine Harvest Take Place?

The Niagara grape harvest generally runs from late summer through early November, with much of the activity taking place throughout September and October. But there isn’t one official harvest date.

Different grape varieties ripen at different times. Grapes destined for sparkling wine are often among the first to be picked because winemakers are looking for the higher acidity and lower sugar levels needed for that style. Other early-ripening varieties follow, while later-ripening red grapes such as Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon can remain on the vines well into October or even early November.

Weather also has a say. Temperature, sunshine, rainfall and the condition of the grapes can all influence when growers and winemakers decide it’s time to pick. That means the timing can look a little different from one vintage to the next.

Then there are the grapes that aren't harvested in fall at all. Some are deliberately left hanging through the first freezes of winter for one of Niagara's most famous specialties: Icewine.

What's Actually Happening in the Vineyards?

Visit Niagara during harvest and you’re seeing the winemaking year reach one of its most important moments.

Picking can begin early in the day, and depending on the vineyard, grape variety and wine being produced, fruit may be harvested by hand or machine. Hand harvesting allows individual bunches to be selected in the vineyard, while modern mechanical harvesters can bring in fruit quickly when timing matters.

Once the grapes arrive at the winery, things get even busier. Grapes can be sorted to remove any damaged or unwanted fruit before heading for the crush pad. From there, they may be destemmed, crushed or pressed depending on the wine being made.

White wine grapes are generally pressed so the juice can be separated from the skins before fermentation. With most red wines, fermentation takes place with the skins, which contribute colour, tannins and flavour.

Visiting Niagara wine country during harvest season can make the wine in your glass feel a little less abstract. Beyond the usual rows of vines and barrels, there's a good chance you'll see bins of freshly picked grapes arriving, equipment running and winery teams moving quickly to handle fruit at just the right moment.

Suddenly, the vineyard outside isn't simply scenery. It's where the next vintage is beginning.

The Niagara Icewine Harvest: Winter's Second Act

As the traditional harvest draws to a close, Niagara grape growers and winemakers begin cheering on winter, waiting for the deep freeze that signals Icewine harvest can begin.

Grapes intended for Niagara Icewine are deliberately left on the vines into winter and protected while growers wait for temperatures to fall low enough for an Icewine harvest. Under VQA requirements, grapes used for Icewine must be naturally frozen on the vine and harvested at temperatures of -8°C or colder.

That can mean picking grapes in the middle of a freezing winter night or during the early morning hours. The frozen fruit is then pressed while still frozen, leaving much of its water behind as ice and producing a small amount of intensely concentrated juice.

Think of it as harvest season’s encore: colder, a little more dramatic and uniquely Niagara, culminating in the region’s annual Icewine festivities each January. It’s a remarkable second act in Niagara’s harvest story and one that has helped make Icewine an important part of the region’s identity.

How to Make the Most of Harvest Season in Niagara

Harvest may be serious business for Niagara’s growers and winemakers, but for visitors, it’s a seriously good time to tour the region’s wineries.

There’s plenty happening beyond the vineyards, too. September brings harvest celebrations such as the Niagara Grape & Wine Festival, along with seasonal tastings, winery events and food-and-wine experiences across the region.

With so much going on, it pays to plan ahead. Fall weekends are popular, and tasting rooms, restaurants and special events can get busy. If you're visiting several wineries independently, you'll need to think about reservations, your route between stops and, of course, who will be driving.

That's where a guided Niagara wine tour can make the day much easier.

With Winery Guys Tours, you can leave the logistics to us and concentrate on enjoying wine country. Our Wine & Charcuterie With Lunch Break shared morning tour visits three wineries and includes 9–12 tastings, a mini-charcuterie pairing, a winemaking facility tour and time to enjoy historic Niagara-on-the-Lake.
