Wine tasting etiquette isn't about memorizing rules or feeling self-conscious. It's about unlocking the full sensory experience that makes exploring wine country so magical. Here, our Winery Guys Tours guides share some proper wine tasting etiquette to help you enjoy the best experience possible.

The Essential Guide to Wine Tasting Etiquette

Wine tasting is a way to discover new flavours and spend time with others, and knowing the right etiquette can help you and those around you have an incredible experience. Whether you’re at a vineyard, a private event, or a restaurant, understanding what to do helps you feel confident and enjoy yourself.

At Winery Guys Tours, we've spent years guiding wine enthusiasts through Ontario's beautiful wine country, and we've learned that good etiquette isn't about stuffy rules. It's about respect, appreciation, and making the most of every pour.

Before You Visit

A little planning goes a long way in wine country. Here's what you need to know about how to prepare for your day of tastings.

Reservations & Planning

Most wineries now ask guests to make reservations, even if you’re travelling alone. And while some places allow walk-ins, it’s a good idea to call ahead so the staff can be ready for you. If you’re coming with a group, you’ll likely need to reserve your visit since many wineries limit group sizes. When you book with Winery Guys Tours, we take care of all the details, including reservations, timing, and transportation, so you can just enjoy the experience.

What to Wear

You don’t need to dress formally for wine country, but comfortable and neat clothing works best. If you wear white, just be ready for the chance of a spill and take it in stride. Your choice in shoes matters too. Since you might walk on patios, grass, or dirt paths, it’s better to wear flats instead of heels, and closed-toe shoes are a good choice for outdoor areas.

Layers are essential. Summer calls for lighter fabrics, hats, and sunglasses, but winery tours may include chilly barrel rooms, so bring a light sweater or shawl as well. Ontario's wine regions also experience temperature drops in the late afternoon, making a light jacket a wise choice.

Avoid wearing strong perfumes or colognes. Smell is a big part of wine tasting, and heavy scents can cover up the wine’s aromas and affect others’ experiences.

The Tasting Experience

Once you arrive at the winery, you'll want to know what to expect. Here's how to approach the tasting, from understanding fees to mastering the basics of swirling and sipping.

Fees & Expectations

Most wineries charge tasting fees to cover the wine, glassware, and staff time. If you’re watching your budget, check the fees before you go, and keep in mind that higher prices don’t mean you get unlimited pours.

Mastering the Technique

Swirling the wine helps bring out its aromas. If you aren't comfortable swirling in your hand, set your glass on a table and gently swirl while holding the stem. Always hold the glass by the stem, not the bowl. This will keep fingerprints off and stop the wine from warming.

You'll then want to smell the wine before you taste it. Take a deep breath to enjoy the aromas. When you sip, move the wine around your mouth so it touches all areas. You’ll notice different sensations, and your impressions might change from the first to the third sip as you get used to the flavours.

If you’re tasting several wines at once, start with whites before reds, then high-acid wines before low-acid, and light-bodied before full-bodied. Save dessert wines for last.

The Art of Spitting

Spitting during wine tasting is not only acceptable but also encouraged, especially if you're visiting several wineries. Professional tasters spit regularly to keep their palate and sobriety intact. Most wineries provide spit buckets, but don't hesitate to ask for one if needed.

Pacing & Behaviour

Pace yourself to get the most out of wine tasting. Try to visit two to four wineries a day, and leave time for local tours and meals in between.

Wine tasting isn’t about becoming intoxicated. You should drink water, eat before and during tastings, keep track of how much you’re having, and keep conversations friendly. Tasting rooms are relaxed and fairly casual, but it’s best to save loud or rowdy behaviour for another time.

Even if you’re careful and spitting each sip, you're still likely to take in a little wine. Always arrange for a designated driver. With Winery Guys Tours, you don’t have to worry. We provide professional transportation so everyone can enjoy the tasting safely.

Making Purchases & Showing Appreciation

Buying bottles you like can help you remember your visit. Check your province’s shipping rules, as they can be different. Many wineries offer wine club memberships with perks like free tastings, special releases, and event invitations. Ask about costs, shipping, and benefits, but don’t join just to skip a tasting fee.

Tipping customs change by region, but it’s always polite to tip the person pouring your wine, especially if they spent extra time sharing information or giving a detailed tour.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Here are some of the ways you can make your next winery visit the best possible experience.

  • Don't be late! Arriving late without letting the winery know can disrupt their schedule and affect other guests.
  • Treat tastings as a chance to learn, not just to drink.
  • Be ready for fees and respect your server’s knowledge.
  • Don’t dominate the conversation or rush through the wines, as it can keep everyone from enjoying the experience.

How Good Etiquette Enhances Your Experience

Good wine tasting etiquette helps everyone appreciate, learn, and connect. If you arrive prepared, pace yourself, and show respect, you’ll enjoy your time in wine country even more. Being polite shows respect for winemakers, staff, and other guests, making the experience better for everyone.
